In 1538, at the dissolution, Beaulieu Abbey, King John’s great Cistercian foundation, was purchased from the Crown by the first Earl of Southampton, passing by marriage to the Dukes of Montagu and then to the Dukes of Buccleuch. The Beaulieu Record by H.E.R Widnell is the history of the manor under its lay owners.
