Freddie McAlpine-Riddell

Sculptor Profile

Freddie creates figurative artwork to showcase the natural beauty of discarded tools and machinery. His metal animals take shape through mig and stick welding, with the vast majority of components used not altered to fit specific shapes but maintaining their natural and true form. This process creates a complex jigsaw puzzle of up-cycled tools that, regardless of their weight, giving the illusion that they’re light and almost floating.

It’s important to him that everyone finds a way to communicate with my work. He’s found through the materials he uses, people of all ages can identify the materials and build a relationship with the animals.

Sustainability is central to his practice. By upcycling these discarded and often degrading materials, he can offer them a second lease of life. These tools had a purpose before he found them and were critical to trade. Now they live on with a new purpose, that of structure and beauty. He hopes to inspire others and encourage creative ways to repurpose debris, in turn minimising and reimagining waste and how we interact with it.
