Chris Johns

Sculptor Profile

Based in Warwickshire, Chris is a sculptor specialising in metalwork. He graduated from Birmingham School of Art in 2008 and was awarded a bursary from the Coalbrookdale Museum of Steel Sculpture to take part in their Cast Iron Sculpture program bringing together artists from the UK, USA and Poland.

This turned out to be a formative experience both in terms of the personal relationships forged and in putting hands-on craft and industrial materials and process firmly at the heart of his practice not just as a means to an end but as a source of inspiration in their own right.

This experience led to a series of large scale public sculpture projects with a focus on industrial heritage drawing on his engineering background, working in cast iron, steel and bronze including a series of commissions for schools across Shropshire and a major exhibition of cast iron sculpture at the STEAM museum.

Today Chris works in a variety of formats including public art, private commissions and theatre design and continues to be inspired by engineering and craft processes with an emphasis on mechanisms. structure and materiality.
