Lord Montagu’s tribute to his father a century after his birth
20th Oct 2026
On 20th October 1926, there were celebrations in Beaulieu when my father was born. 25 years later, he honoured his own father’s motoring achievements by creating a motor museum at Beaulieu, now in its 74th year.
What my father could not have guessed is that 100 years after his birth, we would be honouring his achievements, not just in celebrating British motoring history but also as a champion of what became known as the stately homes industry.
As the founding Chairman of English Heritage, his legacy endures throughout the country. For those who knew him, the memory of his energy and enthusiasm continues to resonate, especially at Beaulieu which he worked so hard to preserve.
