The Aims Of The Organisation
As can be seen from the Management Structure Chart elsewhere in these information pages, Beaulieu comprises a variety of organisations, each established for a specific purpose, and having its own defined objectives. However, whatever their area of activity, all Beaulieu based organisations subscribe to one overall aim which has been defined as follows:
To ensure the continued existence and continual enhancement of the Beaulieu Estate as an entity in family ownership, as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and an integral part of the New Forest and to make appropriate areas of the Estate accessible for public enjoyment.
Montagu Ventures Limited
Within the structure of organisations at Beaulieu, Montagu Ventures is the management company with overall responsibility for development and management of leisure and tourist services. Its aims have been defined as follows:
- To provide public access to sites suitable for leisure and recreational activities at Beaulieu and Buckler's Hard, while protecting more sensitive areas of the Estate.
- To manage leisure facilities at Beaulieu and Buckler's Hard including Palace House and gardens, Beaulieu Abbey, the National Motor Museum, and at Buckler's Hard the village, historic cottages and Maritime Museum.
- To market these facilities to attract the maximum number of visitors which may be accommodated without detriment to either tile physical environment or visitor enjoyment.
- To apply income from leisure activities to either the improvement of visitor services and facilities, or the restoration and conservation of heritage buildings and landscape within the boundaries of the Estate.
The content of the final aim deserves particular attention. Montagu Ventures Limited does not have a body of shareholders who take profits from its activities. All the income from tourism is re-invested to the ultimate benefit of the Estate.
The National Motor Museum Trust
This Trust is the Charity that has responsibility for the collections of the National Motor Museum. Responsibility for the public showing of the Museum is vested in Montagu Ventures Limited who is responsible to the Trust under the terms of a management agreement. The National Motor Museum Trust discharges the traditional museological and curatorial responsibilities, which are essential to safeguard the future of the collection. Its aims have been defined as follows:
- To acquire, restore, conserve and research vehicles and other objects related to the History of Motoring in Britain from 1896 to the present day.
- To provide public information services appropriate to a museum of national and international importance.
Beaulieu River Management Company
The River Management Company has mixed objectives, but certain of them are very relevant to leisure and recreation. Its defined aims appear below:
To manage the Beaulieu River as a navigable waterway. To control yachting activity to ensure that visual amenity of the river estuary is not threatened. To maintain the Beaulieu River as a destination, a pleasant place for visitors to sail. To control fishing activities on the Beaulieu River to ensure that the long-term conservation of fish and shellfish stocks is not threatened.
The aims of other organisations at Beaulieu have no direct relevance to the development and management of tourism activities on the Estate.
